The biggest independent in the Nordics changes name

On September 1st 2010 the biggest independent music company in the Nordics will change name from Bonnier Amigo Music Group to COSMOS MUSIC GROUP. All local affiliates will change theirnames as well, to Cosmos Music Sweden, Cosmos Music Norway, Cosmos Music Denmark and Cosmos Music Finland respectively.

The new name follows a number of strategic and structural changes that have been implemented at
the region’s leading indie during the past six months. These changes were initiated after the
management buy out which was completed in December 2009, when Fredrik Ekander, Cai Leitner,
Kent Gillström and Christian Drougge bought 100% of the company from previous owner Bonnier AB.
The classic Amigo label (originally launched in 1966) will continue as an active inhouse label, while
the Bonnier Music imprint will be closed down and it´s artists, such as pan-European smash hit act
Madcon, will move onto the main inhouse label Cosmos for all their upcoming releases.
The new website adress is www.cosmosmusicgroup.com and this will launch on Friday August 27th -
same day as Cosmos Music Group is staging a big music industry showcase in Stockholm featuring
live performances from local and international artists on the roster, including Jasmine Kara, Magnus
Carlson & The Moon Ray Quintet, Edith Backlund, John Grant, The Magic Numbers and others.

Cosmos Music Group AB is the biggest independent music company in the Nordics with offices in all
four major music markets of the region. It’s business centers around the signing and developing of
Nordic artists and the distribution of music from other independent labels. The company has a long
and solid track record of marketing and distributing successful international and local artists in the
Nordics, such as Katie Melua, Madcon, Henning Kvitnes, Amy Diamond, Karpe Diem, Hello Saferide,
Brolle, Nisse Hellberg, Robyn, José González, Slipknot, Miss Li, The Refreshments, Sunrise Avenue,
BWO, The Paperboys, Ane Brun, Oasis, The Prodigy, Tom Waits, Nickelback, Bettye LaVette, Fleet
Foxes, Travis, Black Keys and many more.
The digital division of Cosmos Music Group is called IODA Nordic and through IODA Nordic, local
artists and labels will have access to comprehensive digital distribution and targeted, automated
marketing services in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland as well as the rest of the world. IODA’s
worldwide network, which spans every major music market, will provide Cosmos Music Group’s labels
with the ability to more actively build their international fan bases.
IODA is the industry leading digital distribution company for the global independent music
community. Founded in 2003, IODA has quickly built a catalog of nearly two million tracks that is
licensed to more than 400 digital storefronts worldwide. IODA’s catalog represents a diverse range of
music from over 50 countries and is exclusively represented in the Nordics by Cosmos Music Group.

Expect concerts, talks on music, film screenings, an art exhibition and much more. Under the umbrella Music City, media representatives will present their companies as well as cooperation opportunities. Visitors can take part in creative competitions and enjoy performances on stage for Example from Kat Frankie and The Alp. Additionally there is also the Popkomm Cinema presented by pop-culture magazine Intro…

Popkomm Cinema

With IN-EDIT and Rapid Eyes Movies Popkomm has found two new partners that are especially appreciative of music documentaries. As part of Music City festival visitors will be shown a series of humorous and content loaded music documentaries in the Crossair Lounge such as the story of a friendship with heavy metal band Anvil, the star-studded „All Tomorrow’s Parties“, the biography of soul-legend Bill Withers „Still Bill and the really fantastic and exclusive images of the bubbling late 70s New York music scene in „NY 77, the Coolest Year in Hell“. gaffa

Gaffa

GAFFA is a new Popkomm media partner for 2010 but well established within the Scandinavian music industry. GAFFA was established 1983 in Denmark and was one of the first free monthly music magazines. Through continuous development over the last 27 years GAFFA is, with 220,000 readers, by far the largest music magazine in Scandinavia. Over the last decade GAFFA has launched several new web services including a fan shop, ticket shop, TV and a very popular news site at GAFFA.dk. In 2010 GAFFA expanded its business into Sweden with the launch of a local edition of the magazine and the accompanying GAFFA.se.

CEO Robert Borges says: “Our key to success is not just the ability to reuse a well-proven template for both print and web but to choose a local profile for the editorial content. The short term goal is to launch GAFFA in other Nordic countries such as Norway and Finland and thereafter who knows!”. For more information visit GAFFA.com.

primavera

Primavera Sound

The through selection criteria in the choice of artists coupled with the variety of styles and diversity of program, have made San Miguel Primavera Sound a clear international reference of independent music. This has in turn made Barcelona a strategic point of cultural exchange between Europe, North America and the Latin American countries.

Primaverapro is a specific area for professionals in the music sector and is the perfect opportunity to network and to soak up the latest tendencies in independent music. Located right on the seafront and in one of the most attractive spaces o f the Parc del Forum site , the Primaverapro area is an ideal place to channel the synergies created between professionals of different areas of the sector, specialized press and institutions who promote culture and the export of music. Professionals will be able to organize their daytime meetings in a pleasant and welcoming space in the town centre especially reserved for this purpose until the doors of the festival site open. “There is nothing that compares to Primavera Sound Festival. It is, hands down, the very best festival in the world. Though, having said that, it used to be pure fun to go to Primavera. Now it is turning into work, because there are so many music business people from all over the place attending. Then again,! where would you rather conduct your business…?” Christof Ellinghaus, City Slang (record label)

“What happened to The Concretes?” people asked.

Not a single new song in three years from a band that had been as reliable as a Swiss watch, releasing a new album every year. Time passed and even the band started to wonder, “Whatever DID happen to The Concretes?” Well, of course, there was a lots going on. Life, cycling, egg poaching, gardening, travel, children. And other side projects. One member even joined the circus. And songs began to appear. One crystal, Christmas day last year, when everyone was in Stockholm for a drink, they wondered aloud, “Is it time to begin again? Afresh? Refreshed? Can we make an album?” and, after several more, all eight Concretes stood up, raised their glasses and in one voice declared: “YES WE CAN”. But what songs would they make? DISCO, someone said. YES, YES. They all agreed. A DISCO ALBUM. And that is what they did. Well, maybe not disco in the old euphoric seventies way, but in a Concretes-way. It’s disco in the crack between a smile and a tear. Disco dreaming of being elsewhere. With less guitar, more keyboards, more bass, deep languorous vinyl grooves, twitching percussion and some good old cowbell – but still with those trademark melodies – the band is finally back with a new album, a new label, a new focus, a new lease of life, anew. Renewed. The album is called WYWH and it’s coming out in October, 2010. There are remixes coming from Blackbird Blackbird, Niva and more; a video from Jamie Harley, live dates this winter.

Don’t miss out The Concretes live on Popaganda, august 26th at Popaganda Festival, Stockholm!

José González Stars In Documentary

Swedish singer/songwriter José González is the star of a new documentary, The Extraordinary Ordinary Life Of José González , which will begin screening at film festivals in Europe this fall. The film uses video diaries, surveillance material, concert footage, tour documentation and animation to chronicle the meticulous and often frustrating creation of González’s second album, In Our Nature, which was released back in 2007 via Mute. Directors Mikel Cee Karisson and Fredrik Egerstrand shot the film over a three-year period in locales as far-ranging as Sweden, Japan, Singapore, the United States, South Africa, England, Chile and Argentina. Karisson has made music videos for González and fellow enigmatic Swede Fever Ray. The trailer for the film is available here.

González may be a movie star now, but he hasn’t turned his back on music. On September 14, his band Junip will release its long-awaited debut full-length, Fields. The group will then embark on a US tour in November. Junip will be accompanied on most dates by singer/songwriter Sharon Van Etten.
